Ben Roethlisberger Update

Yesterday, I reported that Ben Roethlisberger had been hurt in a motorcycle accident. Today, we know that he underwent surgery to repair the damage. Four doctors performed the surgery and it lasted some seven hours. According to doctors, there were no serious injuries to his vital organs and all of his fractures were fixed properly. At last report he had a broken jaw, broken nose, many missing and cracked teeth, minor injuries to his knees and other lacerations.

Roethlisberger is still listed in serious, but stable, condition. Yesterday the media was in a frenzy over the accident and it turns out that him not wearing a helmet was not as shocking as one might expect. In a previous interview, ESPN talked to Ben Roethlisberger about his motorcycle riding and him not wearing a helmet. He said that he felt freer by not wearing a helmet and since it was not the law in Pennsylvania, he was not going to wear a helmet. He is just one in a long line of sports athletes that ride motorcycles and think they are pros at it. Even the best riders in the world crash and not wearing safety gear is just plain stupid.

Hopefully Roethlisberger will come out of this with flying colors. If he goes back to riding his motorcycle, maybe he will start to wear a helmet and set a better example for kids and other riders. We already lose enough motorcycle riders each year who are wearing the right gear. We certainly don’t need to lose more, because people are not protecting themselves.
