The NFL has such a better fan base than MLB baseball. The proof is in the pudding. Today, that pudding resides in Buffalo where the Bills, despite being a losing team are selling tickets to games. The Bills did not sign any marquee players this off-season. They did not build a new stadium. All they did was get a little creative in their marketing and appeal to the football appetite of fans.
The result so far has been that 4 of their 8 home games are close to being sold out. This is a team that’s been miserable for the past few years and shown no real signs of life. I know what you are thinking. How many people does the stadium hold? The answer is 73,967. That’s right. This is no small stadium. My goodness, the Bills have not been to the playoffs in the past six seasons and really they have done little since their hay days of Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas and crew.
By the way, season ticket sales for the Bills are already at 47,246 according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. When was the last time you saw 50,000-74,000 fans pack into a stadium for a losing (or potentially losing) team? The Buffalo Bills are hoping this year is the one to turn it around, but they are proof that people just love football and football inspires more fan loyalty than other American sports (soccer not included).
