Deion Branch, the top receiver for the New England Patriots, is upset over not getting a contract extension. As a result, he has decided to skip at least day one of the mandatory minicamp. Branch has one year left on his contract—he will make around one million. He wants the added security of future pay. When asked about his absence, Tom Brady said, “it’s tough.â€
Coach Bill Belichick is not taking the matter lightly. It’s uncertain whether or not Branch will suffer disciplinary actions, but knowing Belichick, one can expect it. Belichick does not care about players whining about their contract status. He said, “Branch’s absence is unexcused.â€
It’s clearly a case of “look what he got†for Branch. Last year Richard Seymour pulled the same stunt and was awarded with a raise. These NFL players have no idea of what the word “contract†means. Personally, I think the actions of Branch are in poor form and bad for the game. I am sure the Patriots will buckle, but it would be nice if more teams would show the backbone of say Seattle—remember the Joey Galloway incident? Some could argue that Seattle suffered, but Galloway suffered the most. He was never the same and he eventually missed out on money by pulling that stunt.
