It’s come down to a final threat for the 49ers. The city either needs to build a new stadium now or they are leaving. The target city for is Santa Clara. Larry MacNeil, team president, and Santa Clara officials have met to discuss plans for a brand new stadium for the 49ers.
The current stadium, Candlestick, is over four decades old. A new stadium is long overdue. Since 1997, both sides have been talking about a new stadium, but the deal always stalls. It looks like the 49ers have finally had it with all the stalling around. A new stadium in pricey San Francisco is expected to cost up to $800 million.
It’s unsure whether the team is simply grandstanding or if they are really ready to move. Professional teams do this all the time with cities. It’s a regular soap opera. At any rate, keep your ears open over the coming months. One side is going to have to make a move. I suspect that the 49ers will stay put. There’s no guarantee that Santa Clara can even support the team or that the building of the new stadium in the Great America amusement park parking lot is feasible.
