Unless you have been living in a hole, you know that last month Greenbay Quarterback Brett Favre decided to come back to the Packers for one more season. Evidentially, he felt that despite being 36 and having a miserable year, there was cause for him to come back. Should he have come back?
Last season Favre threw for 3,881 yards, 20 TDs and 29 INTs. It was just the third time in his career that Favre had more interceptions than touchdowns. More importantly, his play clearly cost games last season. Those plays don’t show up in the stats. The Packers were 4-12 last season so perhaps it really did not matter.
For Packers fans, Favre had to return. There is no backup even close in talent and the Packers are in danger of going back to their old form of losing season after season. Favre is expected to throw up many more wild passes this year and the Packers will probably lose a few games as a result, but they might not be that good to begin with anyway. Their schedule is about medium strength, depending on how teams shake out.
Should Favre light a fire under the Packers, they could improve to 8 wins with their schedule. With the star player aging and the mystique of Lambeau Field fading, the best the Packers can hope for is a one and done shot in the playoffs. All indicators point to another year of mediocrity. By their first bye week, Brett Favre might regret having come back for “one last†season.
