NFL Betting Lines Thoughts – Week 1

This is my first NFL betting lines segment for the 2008-09 NFL season. Early each week I’ll talk about the preliminary lines. And I invite you to participate as well.

The NFL season officially kicks off this coming Thursday, so I put the NFL lines and this segment up early.

There are four NFL lines that I will discuss.

Washington at NY Giants -3.5

This is an interesting line. I’d prefer to see it at -3, but it looks a little tasty as is. This preseason, the starters for the Redskins have looked anything but good. They can’t seem to score.

On the other side, the starters for the Giants have looked great. Even with their recent defensive blow, they are still good enough to stop the Redskins’ offense.

Seattle at Buffalo PK

The Seahawks are a menace at home, but rather dull on the road. Still, what has Buffalo done besides lose games lately?

We already know that the Seahawks have a great defense and an offense that’s humming along despite some WR injuries.

So what about the Bills? While allegedly being improved this season, there’s still the matter of not being able to score much. Trent Edwards? Are you sure about that? Even so, he’s hurting (Wed Aug 27 reports point to thigh bruise).

As long as the weather is decent (good footing), the Seattle defense can have a field day with the Bills offense.

Given that it’s a home game for the Bills, I had the Seahawks -4 in this one. We’ll see.

Dallas -4 at Cleveland

It’s the first game in the alleged “magical season” for the Cowboys. And look who they get, the Browns.

Did you watch that Monday night game with the Browns and Giants. That was insane. All preseason, the starters of the Browns’ offense have proven one thing: it’s going to be a long season.

If you truly believe Dallas is the #1 or #2 team in the NFC, how do you not lay the points here?

I would have loved to get -3 (I’m a stickler for good numbers), but even at -4 it’s a bargain in my book.

I’m calling it right here. The Browns won’t finish better than 8-8 this season. My gut is telling me that we’ll be talking about the bad QB signing later this season.

Kansas City at New England -16.5

I’m not touching this game with your money. I just wanted to bring it up, because it’s our first huge NFL line of the season.

This line has already moved about 2.5 points upward on the Patriots, which means the public is hot and heavy for New England.

I can’t really blame them. It’s the Chiefs on the road.

Still, I’ve seen it before. This game has betting disaster written all over it. Patriots get up by say 17 or so, let up some and give up a late “meaningless” TD to the Chiefs.
